Tipping has become something of an art...to some people
it is a nice convenient way to show thanks for above average service...for others it is
merely a means to an end - a way to ensure better than average service on future
visits...and to others it's a nightmare, involving the calculator and scratch paper.
Here I have tried to cover the generals of tipping.
You will surely come across an occasion not covered here. It never fails,
*SMILE* but take heart - if the service was really exceptional, give a little from the
heart and the wallet and you will do just fine.
I would like to point out that you are
never under any obligation to tip for a service (in the U.S.). A tip is a gratuity
for exceptional service, not a part of the bill. I tip when the service
merits it. Don't be intimidated into tipping someone for doing only their
job. I know this will raise the hackles of some service industry employees, but
frankly I am fed up with average service and paying a tip. Average service deserves
a pay check, not a monetary thank you from me. With that said, I am providing
various general tipping scales (bare in mind that these are for U.S. service and not
an international scale - some countries automatically include the tip in the total of the
check. When in doubt, ask! ).
